Obituary

Josephine Hagan (born Josefina Alvarez) passed away peacefully in Naples, FL on August 8th at age 81, surrounded by loved ones. She was born to Spanish-born parents, Jose Alvarez and Maria Patrocino Lopez Alvarez (Patro), on November 16, 1944 in Havana, Cuba. She grew up in Cuba until the revolution. Her parents, concerned for her welfare, sent her to the United States as part of Operation Peter Pan as an unaccompanied teenager in early 1961. She arrived in February in Philadelphia, speaking very little English and having never seen snow before.

She completed high school, began working, and then went to night school at St. Joseph's College (now University.) There she met a young accounting professor, Henry Hagan. After the class ended, he asked her to do some translation for his accounting firm and love blossomed. Theirs was a love story for the ages. They married in 1965 and had two daughters, Patricia (Trish) and Rose. Her parents emigrated from Cuba in 1966 and Jose and Patro lived with them until their deaths.

Henry's job took them from Philadelphia to Los Angeles and then to Connecticut. After his retirement, they spent part of a year in Charlottesville, VA where grandson Christopher had just been born, and ultimately to Naples, FL.

Josephine's life's work was caring for people: her children, her parents, her grandson, and then Henry when he developed Parkinson's disease. She was active in her church and volunteered at the hospitals and food bank in Naples. She loved animals and while the family never had pets (except for goldfish), the neighborhood cats and dogs were frequent visitors and she always had a supply of dog treats in her pockets.

Josephine was preceded in death by her parents and loving husband Henry who she rejoined on his birthday, August 8th. She is survived by her daughters, Trish Hagan (Bill Jones), Rose Hagan (Mark Lemley), and "favorite" grandson, Christopher Barry (Deryn Jakolev).

Josephine's Graveside Service and Interment will be held on Friday August 28, 2026 at 10:00 AM from Calvary Cemetery, 200 Matsonford Road, West Conshohocken, Pa 19428.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Avow Hospice, The Parkinson's Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
